YOUR SPECIAL INVITATION IS HERE!
No matter how much time may pass, may we never forget the price that was paid for our freedom.
The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944 brought together the land, air and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from England, Canada and the United States landed on D-Day. Casualties from the three countries during the landing numbered 10,300.

On Memorial Day, we honor the ultimate sacrifice made by generations of American Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors on behalf of our freedoms. This day honors the more than 1.35 million service members who have given their lives since 1775. Beyond your recreational events today, please take time to remember and appreciate the price paid to maintain our Constitutional republic. Never Forget.

National Poppy Day – Symbol of Sacrifice
Poppy Distribution, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 157
Poppy? What is this you ask?
Many people may not know what a poppy flower is, much less what it symbolizes. The poppy flower is a symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since WWII to honor the fallen reminding us all the sacrifices our veterans have made while protecting our freedoms.
Early 19th Century, after the Napoleonic wars, the land was left desolate and infertile. Magically, red poppy flowers grew around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. In 1914, when WW1 began and fighting broke out in France, after the war, the only plants to regrow were the poppy flowers.
Many countries around the world carry a tradition to wear poppy flowers on November 11 to commemorate Remembrance Day or Armistice Day however, in the United States November 11 is Veteran’s Day, so we wear the red poppy on Memorial Day as tradition to honor and remember those who died in military service.
Where can we obtain a poppy, you might ask?
There will be distribution donation displays at many of the Bandera stores on Main Street during the week preceding Memorial weekend. You can also get them during Bandera's Memorial Day Parade. Just look for the American Legion Auxiliary ladies on the streets distributing poppies during Parade and Celebration for all to wear to symbolize and remember those who died in military service.
Donations for the poppies will be used for the scholarship fund helping to send veteran’s sons/daughters/grandchildren to college or trade school.
