American Legion

            Bandera Post 157 is part of the 21st District and the 4th Division of the American Legion in Texas.  The state is divided into manageable regions that provide the higher level support and direction for the Legion programs.
            Bandera County has another Legion Post 410 located in Lakehills at the intersection of Park Road 37 and 26th St, Telephone: (830) 796-3718.

           Mary Jo Shaffer is the current, part-time Bandera County Veterans Service Officer.  This position is funded by your tax dollars and is focused on ensuring that all veterans and their families receive the VA benefits and services they deserve and qualify for.

HILL COUNTRY RESOURCES

            Monthly meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month @ 9:00AM at the Kerrville Chamber Office, 1700 Sidney Baker Street, Kerrville, Texas 78028, Phone: 830-896-5320.  The HCVC also hosts a quarterly meeting with the South Texas Veterans Administration Health Care System leadership.  VA Healthcare enrollment at the Kerrville Medical Center is encouraged to retain critical capabilities.  All leaders and interested parties from the Hill Country veterans organizations and County VSO's are encouraged to participate and remain current on local VA Healthcare information.

             The Hill Country Veterans Council's mission is (1) to maintain a full range of appropriate services at the Kerrville Veterans Administration medical facility, (2) to ensure excellence in all health care provided at the facility, and (3) to strive for the satisfaction of every veteran using the facility.

             Bandera County is supported by the Military Veteran Peer Network located in the Hill Country Veterans Center (Old Armory), 411 Meadowview Lane, Kerrville, TX 78028, 830-258-5433.  Also, the Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities (MHDD) Center, 819 Water Street, Kerrville, TX  78028, Crisis Hotline: 1-877-466-0660.  Jasen Wells is now leading a weekly Veterans group in Bandera at the United Methodist Church every Tuesday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.  See more under "Current Events" on this website.

            Provides connections to:  Seeking safety, Veteran Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), VA Status and Claims, Career Advising, Vet Agency Referrals, Personal Skill Development, Women’s Groups, Trauma Therapy Referrals.

            The Hill Country Veterans Center will provide a place for veterans of all wars to find help with their problems, comradeship with other veterans in similar circumstances and a place to relax and unwind the pressures of daily life.
            The Center is located at 411 Meadowview Lane (Old Armory), Kerrville, TX.  Phone:  (830) 315-3100.  The facility houses both volunteer Veterans Organization Service Officers and the Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) personnel.

            The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) is a state agency that was created to serve the needs of our State’s Veterans.  It is the purpose of the TVC to serve Texas veterans, their dependents or survivors, in all matters pertaining to veterans’ benefits and rights.  It operates 3 programs; 1) Claims Representation & Counseling; 2) Veterans Employment Services; and 3) Veterans Education.

            The website has detailed information on each of these programs and their respective Points of Contact.  This will put you in touch with State Veterans Claims Counselors, Veterans County Service Officers, Veterans Employment Representatives, and Veterans Education Program Specialists.

            Responsible for the following programs:  land loans, home loans, home improvement loans, state veterans homes, state veterans cemeteries, Voices of Veterans program, and dates of Veterans Benefit fairs across the state.

            Texas State Veterans Home Program: includes the Texas State Veterans Homes that are managed through a partnership between the State of Texas and the Department of Veterans Affairs.  There are currently 8 homes across the state and 4 cemeteries.

Texas Military Family Access Project                                       2-1-1 Texas

            Combat service in Afghanistan and Iraq is producing critical and unique issues for a new generation of active duty Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Reservists, Texas National Guard members, veterans and their families.  2-1-1 Military Call Specialists help military service members and their loved ones achieve stable and productive lives before, during and after deployment. They provide referrals for financial assistance, marital problems, anger management, depression and anxiety, child care, legal services, medical care, drug and alcohol abuse treatment, employment, and many other special needs.  A Texas/United Way Help Line serving 12 counties, including Bandera.
